Traveling to Costa Rica on a Budget
Traveling to Costa Rica might be a bit more expensive for some people. However, there’s nothing proper budgeting cannot do.
One thing to know is that you don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money on a trip to make it a great and unforgettable experience. There are tons of other ways to make your excursion a lot more meaningful, regardless of your budget.
For some, they keep their itinerary as simple as possible. To them, a budget hotel serves the same purpose as a luxury hotel — they both give the same amount of sleep. Likewise, a public beach lets you enjoy the same sand and salt in private resorts.
Indeed, you can always enjoy a new place in more ways than one, even with a very limited budget. That said, here’s how you can enjoy a budget-friendly trip to Costa Rica:
Museum Hopping
The capital city of Costa Rica, San José, may not be the first on your list of places to visit, but you definitely should consider it. Here you will find numerous magnificent museums that give you a glimpse of Latin American culture.
When you’re in the country, make sure to visit some of these historical spots. Listed below are a few of the museums you should check out; included are their respective rates.
- National Museum: $9 per person
- National Theater: $10 per person
- Gold Museum: $11per person
- Jade Museum: $15 per person
- National Center for Arts and Culture: FREE admission on Mondays
- Museo de Arte Costarricense: FREE admission on Saturdays
Visit National Parks
There are at least 20 national parks in Costa Rica. You shouldn’t miss your chance to visit them! With a modest budget, you can still have loads of fun while exploring what the country has to offer.
Pay a visit to some of these national parks:
- Cahuita National park: FREE admission
As you can see from the list above, private reserves cost a lot more than national parks. Still, it’s great not to miss this beautiful travel spot.
Stay Outdoors
Explore the outdoors and wander through the streets of Mercado Central. It’s the perfect place to enjoy famous Costa Rican cuisine — Gallo Pinto, Casado, Ceviche, Picadillo, and Copo. Here, you can also purchase some souvenirs and handmade crafts that can make ideal gifts for your family and friends back home.
After exploring the market, you can head to La Sabana Park for a fulfilling picnic. You can also watch people pass by, play soccer with locals, and enjoy the rest of your day lounging on the park’s green grass.
Take a Dip in Local Swimming Holes
One of the unique things Costa Rica can offer visitors is its numerous swimming holes and waterfalls. The best part is, you can enjoy them for free.
If you love swimming, here are a few spots you should go to:
La Fortuna Swimming Hole: FREE
Also called the Poza El Salto, it’s located downstream from the La Fortuna waterfall. Here you climb on the rocks and bathe in the river. If you feel a little adventurous, you can also try their rope swing.
Note: If you want to check out the waterfall, you’ll have to pay an entrance fee of $18. If you only want to check out the swimming hole, you don’t have to pay any form of fee.
La Fortuna Hot Spring: FREE
Locals call it the El Choyn or Rio Chollin. This free hot spring has the same river that runs through the Tabacon resort. The best time to visit this local hot spring is during the weekends where there are more people, and the place becomes more lively.
Rio Celeste Swimming Hole: FREE
Before you can reach the swimming hole, you’ll have to pass through the entrance of Tenorio Volcano National Park first where you need to pay $5 for admission.
Afterward, you need to follow the trails leading to Celeste waterfall. It’s approximately 1.5km from the parking area of the park. A few meters away is the Rio Celeste swimming hol3.
Note: If you want to check out the waterfall, you’ll have to pay an entrance fee of $12 per person. If you only want to check out the swimming hole, you don’t have to pay any form of fee.
Aside from local swimming holes, it’s also important to take note that all beaches in the country are open to the public unless located within a national park or a private reserve.
If you plan on checking out the public beaches, don’t miss out on water activities like surfing, snorkeling, and diving. Surfboard rental shops are open 24 hours a week. A day’s use will set you back by $20. Boogie boards, on the other hand, are rented out for $5/2 hours of use only.
This proves to say that you don’t need much to have salt in your cheeks and sand in your hair while in Costa Rica.
