If it’s possible, you can just keep these people out of your life. Trying to appease everyone even if you know some people won’t do you any good can be tiresome. You’ll end up wasting time you could’ve spent with people who truly matter.

But if there’s no way around it and you really have to interact with them, you’ll have to set strict boundaries. You need to make it clear that you won’t tolerate their problematic behaviors or bend over backwards to accommodate things you don’t like or agree with.

When you’re setting your boundaries, here’s a few things to keep in mind:

  • Ask for an apology every time you feel like you were wronged.
  • Never let yourself be forced to agree with something you don’t.
  • Speak your mind whenever it’s appropriate and warranted.
  • Don’t hesitate to take up space that’s meant to be yours.
  • Learn to recognize the times when you are being manipulated and find out the best ways to defend yourself.
  • Avoid rising to a bait that only wants to make you come out as someone who is easily provoked.
  • Don’t try to please everyone.
