MODERN DATING
“Are interracial relationships a trend today?”
The term “trend” can have a bit of a negative connotation in this case, because then it means that interracial relationships are so popular that people want to try it since it’s what everybody else is doing and not out of genuine interest in the person they’re dating.
What I do know is that the internet has made it possible now to consider interracial relationships as seriously as people would think about dating locally or being with people in the same country. Since online dating has become so accessible, the inconvenience of having to travel to fall in love with someone on the other side of the globe is taken out of the equation.
With technology, the world has suddenly become much smaller, making interracial relationships easier to build and maintain. When before we were limited with the people close to us, now we can have more options.
Personally, it’s helped women like me go out of our comfort zone and connect with potential partners from all over the world (see this article on Costa Rica Women and American Men). Obviously, there’s still some challenges. For example, if we keep calling it a “trend” instead of just a natural result of technology, a lot of people will inevitably be at the risk of stereotypes and discrimination. Still, it truly has more pros than cons, so I’m not worried.
