Traveling is fun, but you shouldn’t take it lightly — nor prepare for it half-heartedly.

Not to scare you, but for some reason, every time someone goes abroad to travel, there’s always something that goes wrong.

Some are a lot less dire than others, like forgetting a towel, not having enough cash, or not having a charger for their phones. But those that have it worse make other people at home end up fearing traveling in general.

Incidents about getting lost, scammed, robbed, and the worst of them all, forgetting their passport are just a few things I can think of at the top of my head. You can bet that there are other issues out there that I don’t even know about.

But don’t let them discourage you from traveling. You can avoid travel mishaps if you do your research and come prepared.

General travel tips to ALWAYS take note of

First off, planning.

Never forgo a good plan. Doing your research is the first step, but planning about what to do next and what happens if you do this and that is important. You always have to be prepared for anything, especially if you’re going to an unfamiliar area. And in this case, being paranoid helps a bit.

Aside from that, remember to pack the following essentials:

  1. Passport
  2. Your ID
  3. Vaccination card
  4. A set of clothes (obviously)
  5. Medicine (preferably prescribed)
  6. Your phone, charger, and headphones
  7. Electronic devices and their chargers
  8. Sunscreen
  9. Hotel reservations and the like
  10. Blanket
  11. Small pillow
  12. Shaving kit for (for men)
  13. Feminine essentials like pads and other sanity kits (for women)
  14. Toiletries
  15. First aid kit
  16. Credit card
  17. Copies of your important documents
  18. Running shoes
  19. Slippers or sandals

Another thing you should remember is to rely on online apps like Google Maps, Paypal(or any app that lets you pay for stuff), and translators.

Don’t forget to bring cash as well. You never know when you might need actual money rather than just your card.

As for your safety: if you’re not confident about going alone, go in groups. Stick to famous tourist spots if you don’t mind the increased price rates. Always update family members and friends at home as to where you are just in case something happens.

Travel tips specifically for a Costa Rican trip

Costa Rica is a thriving tourist spot, so you don’t have to worry about not getting a hotel or a nice place to stay. You just have to heed the weather and look out for the peak season. For those that want to retreat to a warm country like Costa Rica during winter, you may need to book and plan in advance.

Here are some other things you should take note of:

  • Try going for an organized tour
  • Watch out for your belongings
  • Consider learning the language
  • Don’t be afraid to befriend the locals
  • Respect the country and its locals

Accept that not everything will go as planned

As with everything else in life, nothing always goes as planned. Still, some people tend to make backup plans for their backup plans because there’s always going to be that little hitch in everyone else’s strategic planning.

Just be smart. That’s all you need to do. Have fun while you’re at it.
